Nakatsugawa-juku was the forty-fifth of the sixty-nines post towns of the Nakasendo.There are many historical artifacts remaining today, including a stone monument with a haiku written by Matsuo Basho.Edo period Nakasendo was the important road, flourished as a center of commerce.Nakatsugawa-juku was the largest station in Tokai region (present Aichi, Gifu, Mie, and Shizuoka pref.), many travelers and merchants passed, original cultures appeared. One of these culture is Japanese confectionery, especially famous is "kurikinton" which is made with chestnuts.

There are more than 20 Japanese-style confectionary stores and various confectioneries.

If you like Japanese-style confectionary, you definitely should try to eat them here. The greatest features of Nakatsugawa-juku is "Masugata" and " Udatsu".

Masugata

Masugata means a path that was connected to the Honjin and was primarily designed bend to the right or left and narrow in order to prevent an enemy from easily proceeding in a straight line.

Udatsu

Udatsu is a wall that is higher than the roofline and was built between neighboring houses. Udatsu has a mini roof structure on top of the wall which was designed to prevent the wall from catching fire. The main purpose of these walls is to prevent fires from spreading to neighboring structures, thus isolating the fire to its original location.
